The Genial Hearth
I’ve just put the kettle on, join me for a cuppa and a chat.

Jack and the Beanstalk…

…here we come!

About half a dozen of the beans are sprouting visibly… I think the rain we had this morning disturbed the soil a little, washed it from on top of them. I hope that the rest of them are doing as well.

No signs from the butternut as yet, but this site says 7-14 days for germination—so I guess that means sometime this coming week. (My there are a lot of sites about growing pumpkins!

I planted three passionfruit (not that there’s really room for them, but I haven’t had much success in the past, and this way I’m hoping that one of them will survive). Sadly, at this point it appears that something (I’m guessing snails) have eaten the leaves on the Panama Gold. The Panama Red was the most vigorous looking to start with, and it appears to be continuing that way. The black (Nellie Kelly, the one you usually see) was the least happy looking, but it seems to be doing okay.

I haven’t watered today, but I did spend quite a while pulling out grass:-( It seems there were grass seeds in the soil and they have been sprouting. I need to head out again with a container so I can pick mulberries. They’re still only ripening at eating pace, but we should hit baking quantities soon.

And the thyme is dead. It was always fairly likely given the small number of leaves when we found and rescued it (I think I counted six or so, and thyme leaves are really small!). Something we’ll need to replace as thyme is quite useful.

I still need to separate the beetroot (should do it before they get too much bigger, I guess) and put the chocolate mint in a bigger pot. It seems to have survived Puggle’s efforts at killing it, so it deserves better:-)
